When we started Calendara, we had one conviction: the hardest part of family life isn't the events — it's being the only one who knows about them. The school flyer on the fridge, the camp PDF in your inbox, the practice time the coach scribbled on paper. Somebody has to read all of that, type it in, and remember to tell everyone. Usually the same somebody.

Calendara 2.0 is our biggest release yet, and all of it serves that one conviction. Here's what's new.

A calmer home for your family's week

The whole app has been redesigned — warmer, quieter, easier to read at a glance on a chaotic Tuesday. Soft creams, a coral accent, type you can read from across the kitchen. Less like a productivity dashboard, more like a well-kept fridge door. We spent this release on the parts you actually touch — the week view, the add-event sheet, the moment you open the app between drop-off and your first meeting — so the calm shows up where it counts, not just in the marketing screenshots.

Your calendar, lists, and family settings all moved into the new design, and nothing important is more than two taps away. If you've been comparing options, our roundup of the best shared family calendar apps explains why we think design warmth matters as much as feature checklists.

The magic now happens in your first minute

New users used to set up an account, look at an empty calendar, and then discover what Calendara can do. We flipped it. During setup, 2.0 asks for one thing: a photo of any schedule in your life — a school flyer, a camp PDF, the team roster. Our AI reads it and builds your first events while you watch. You arrive at your calendar and it's already yours.

If you've never seen it: take a photo, and every date on the page becomes an event — titles, times, locations. Handwriting included. We wrote a deeper walkthrough of how the photo-to-calendar flow works under the hood if you're curious.

Joining a family finally feels like being invited

When your partner or a grandparent accepted your invite, the old Calendara dropped them into the same setup built for brand-new users — confusing, and honestly a little rude to the person doing you the favor of showing up.

In 2.0, invited family members get their own welcome: they see whose family they're joining, connect their calendar if they want, and land in the shared week immediately. Two steps, not ten. We've got a short guide on how to share a family calendar if you want the full walkthrough.

If someone declined your invite before — or accepted and quietly gave up — this is the moment to send it again.

Lists, ready on day one

Grocery runs and chore charts live next to the calendar now, and setup offers you starter lists so you don't begin from a blank page. Shared, checked off in real time, and connected to the same family. No separate app to download, no extra sign-up for your partner.

Small things that add up

A few quieter changes you'll feel without quite noticing them: events you add show up faster, reminders are steadier, and the whole app loads quicker on an older iPhone you've been meaning to replace. None of it makes a headline — but it's the difference between a calendar you trust and one you keep double-checking against the flyer on the fridge. We'd rather earn the first one.

And everything you already rely on

Two-way Google Calendar sync, color-coding by family member, reminders for everyone — all still here, all wearing the new design. Events you add in Calendara appear in Google Calendar and vice versa, so family members who prefer a different app still stay in the loop.

Calendara 2.0 is rolling out now on the App Store, free during Early Access. If your family's calendar still lives in one person's head, this is a good week to move it out.
