Cozi has been the default family calendar app since the iPhone 3G era, and credit where due: it normalized the idea that a family should share one calendar. If you're comparing Cozi and Calendara in 2026, the honest summary is that they disagree about one thing, and that disagreement decides everything else.

Cozi assumes someone will type the schedule in. Calendara assumes nobody should have to.

The core difference: how events get into the calendar

Every family calendar lives or dies on data entry. The school sends a year calendar with 40 dates. Camp sends a PDF. The coach sends a photo of handwriting on a whiteboard. With Cozi, one parent transcribes all of it, event by event — which is exactly the mental-load job a family app was supposed to remove.

With Calendara, you take a photo of the flyer, the PDF, or the handwriting, and AI extracts every event on it — titles, dates, times, locations — then adds them to the shared family calendar. The 40-date school calendar takes about twenty seconds. That's not a feature difference; it's a different answer to whose job the calendar is.

Cozi does have AI now, and it's worth being precise about what it does. Cozi Max ($79.99/year) includes AI Event Import, which pulls events from your email inbox — forwarded invitations, confirmation emails, that kind of thing. It also adds AI Recipe Creator and AI Meal Planner. Those are genuinely useful if most of your scheduling arrives by email. But they don't help with the flyer pinned to the fridge, the camp PDF your spouse screenshotted, or the coach's handwritten practice schedule. That's the gap Calendara fills: it reads the photo, not the inbox. And during Early Access, Calendara's AI is free.

Note that Cozi's two lower tiers — Free ($0) and Gold ($39/year) — have no AI at all. On those plans, every event is still manual entry. For a deeper look at what each plan includes, see our Cozi pricing breakdown.

Where each one is strong

Calendara shines when you're the parent who absorbs every schedule the household generates. Take a photo of the school year calendar and 40 events land in the shared calendar in one pass. Photograph the soccer team's season schedule, the summer camp PDF, or a friend's handwritten save-the-date — same result. Beyond AI extraction, Calendara offers true two-way Google Calendar sync (events created in Google appear in Calendara, and vice versa), so every family member sees the same calendar regardless of what app they open. Family invites take about two steps. Shared lists let everyone check off groceries in real time. The design is calmer and more glanceable than Cozi's ad-supported layout. And it's free during Early Access — no tiers, no caps.

Cozi has earned its place for good reasons. It's been around for over fifteen years, and a lot of families already have their routines built around it. The recipe box and meal planner are a real draw if your family plans meals weekly. Cozi has native Android and web apps today — Calendara is iPhone and iPad only, with family members on Android or the web staying in sync by reading the shared calendar through Google Calendar sync. Cozi Max's email-based AI import is handy if most of your events come as email confirmations (flight bookings, appointment confirmations, Evite invitations). And if your school's PTA already coordinates through Cozi, there's something to be said for staying where the group is.

The fine print worth knowing

Cozi's free tier shows ads and caps how far ahead you can see to about 30 days — so you can't check the spring recital date in October. Cozi Gold ($39/year) removes ads and unlocks month view, calendar search, and a birthday tracker. Cozi Max ($79.99/year) adds the AI tools. For context, that's $79.99 a year for email-based AI that doesn't read a photo. Calendara is free during Early Access with no ads and no 30-day cap.

On sync: Cozi's Google Calendar integration is read-only in most setups — it can pull events in, but changes you make in Google don't flow back. Calendara's sync is genuinely two-way: create an event in Google Calendar and it appears in Calendara, edit it in Calendara and the change pushes back to Google. For families where one parent lives in Google Calendar and the other prefers a dedicated family app, that matters.

Who should pick which

Pick Cozi if your family needs a native Android app today, you use the recipe box and meal planner regularly, and most of your scheduling arrives by email (where Cozi Max's AI import does the job). If everyone in the household is already comfortable typing events in, Cozi is a known quantity that works.

Pick Calendara if the person reading this is the person who does the typing — and would rather stop. If you regularly receive schedules as photos, PDFs, screenshots, or handwritten notes, Calendara's AI turns a photo into calendar events in seconds. If two-way Google Calendar sync matters to your family. If you want a free app that doesn't show ads or cap your calendar at 30 days.

Or just try the fastest test: find the most chaotic schedule in your house — the camp PDF, the team roster, the school year calendar — and photograph it with Calendara. If watching every date land on a shared calendar in one pass doesn't settle the question, Cozi will still be there.
