Cozi and FamilyWall are the two most established family organizer apps, both cross-platform, both around $40 a year for the good tier, and both built for the same busy household. Cozi is the simpler, cheaper, more reliable pick for a shared calendar with lists and meals. FamilyWall wins if you specifically want location sharing, family messaging, or budgeting in the same app — and can live with reliability complaints and a $44.99/yr Premium. Neither one solves the job that actually eats a parent's evening: typing the schedule in. Here's the full comparison, and the third option that does.

What Cozi does well

Cozi has been the default family calendar since the early iPhone era, and its strengths are the basics done well: a shared, color-coded calendar; shopping and to-do lists; a recipe box; and the weekly digest email that lands in every family member's inbox on Sunday. It's on iPhone, Android, and the web, so nobody in the house is left out.

The tiers are worth understanding. Cozi Free ($0) shows ads and — since May 2024 — caps the forward calendar view at roughly 30 days, so you can't see the spring recital in October. Cozi Gold ($39/yr) removes ads and unlocks month view, calendar search, and a birthday tracker. Cozi Max ($79.99/yr) adds AI Event Import, which pulls events from your email inbox, plus an AI recipe creator and meal planner. Our Cozi pricing breakdown and Cozi review go through each tier in detail.

The two limits that matter: Cozi's Google Calendar sync is one-way (Cozi → Google only), and no Cozi tier can read a photo of a schedule.

What FamilyWall does well

FamilyWall's pitch is "everything in one place": a shared calendar, lists, a meal planner, chore charts, family messaging, and — on Premium — real-time location sharing with check-ins and a budget tracker. If you're currently running Cozi for the calendar, Life360 for location, a group text for messaging, and a spreadsheet for shared expenses, FamilyWall's argument is that it collapses all four.

FamilyWall Premium is $44.99 per year (monthly plans are also offered) and is where the meaningful features live, including Google and Outlook calendar sync. It runs on iPhone, Android, web, and Windows. Our FamilyWall review and FamilyWall pricing breakdown cover the free-versus-Premium split.

The recurring knock on FamilyWall is reliability: users report sync delays and notifications that don't fire, which for a calendar app is the one thing that can't fail. And there's no AI at any tier — every event is typed.

Cozi vs FamilyWall on price

Year 13 years
Cozi Free$0 (ads, ~30-day window)$0
Cozi Gold$39$117
Cozi Max$79.99$239.97
FamilyWall Free$0 (no external sync)$0
FamilyWall Premium$44.99$134.97

Cozi Gold is the cheaper "real" tier by about $6 a year. If you need location sharing or budgeting, FamilyWall Premium is the only one of the two that has them, so the comparison ends there.

Cozi vs FamilyWall on sync

For a household where one parent lives in Google Calendar, sync direction is the deciding factor.

  • Cozi pushes Cozi events into Google Calendar, but changes made in Google don't come back into Cozi. You end up maintaining two calendars.
  • FamilyWall syncs Google and Outlook only on Premium, and users report that sync can lag.
  • Calendara has true two-way Google Calendar sync included — create or edit in either place and both update.

Our Cozi vs Google Calendar comparison goes deeper on why one-way sync causes so much friction.

Cozi vs FamilyWall on reliability

A family calendar has one job it can't fail at: the reminder has to fire and the change has to show up on the other phone. Cozi's reputation here is boring in the best way — it's been stable for years, and the weekly digest email is a second line of defense if someone missed a notification. FamilyWall's broader feature set comes with more moving parts, and the most consistent complaint in its reviews is exactly the failure a family can't afford: sync that lags between devices and notifications that don't arrive. If you're choosing FamilyWall for location sharing, test the calendar sync with your partner for a week before you cancel anything else.

Cozi vs FamilyWall on lists and meals

Both apps have shared shopping and to-do lists that update in real time, and both cover meals — Cozi with its recipe box (and an AI meal planner on Max), FamilyWall with a built-in meal planner. FamilyWall adds chore charts with assignments, which Cozi only approximates with lists. If chores and a weekly meal plan are the core of how your household runs, FamilyWall has the more complete toolkit; if you mostly need a grocery list everyone can see in the store, Cozi's is simpler and faster.

Cozi vs FamilyWall on getting events in

This is where both apps put the work back on you. The school sends a year calendar with forty dates. Camp sends a PDF. The coach texts a photo of the practice schedule. In Cozi and FamilyWall alike, a parent types every one of those events by hand — Cozi Max can import events from email, which helps with confirmation emails and forwarded invitations, but not with paper, PDFs from the group chat, or handwriting.

Neither app reads a photo. That's the gap the third option fills.

The third option: Calendara

Calendara is an iPhone and iPad family calendar built so nobody has to be the household's typist. Photograph the flyer, the printed calendar, the camp PDF, or the handwritten schedule, and AI extracts every event — title, date, time, location — into a shared, color-coded family calendar. Forty dates take about twenty seconds, and you review them before saving.

It also has two-way Google Calendar sync, shared grocery/to-do/chore lists with photo-to-list capture (photograph the handwritten grocery list and it becomes a shared digital list), recipes from photos, family invites by QR code, and per-member view/edit permissions. No ads, no 30-day cap. It's free during early access — a 7-day full-access preview, then $4.99/mo or $39.99/yr once pricing begins — and families who join during early access keep their access.

What Calendara doesn't do: location sharing, messaging, budgeting, meal planning as a module — or Android. It's iPhone and iPad only; Android relatives follow the shared calendar through Google Calendar via the two-way sync. Head-to-heads: Calendara vs Cozi and Calendara vs FamilyWall.

Who should pick which

Pick Cozi if you want the simplest, most stable cross-platform family calendar with lists and meals, and you're fine typing events in. Gold at $39/yr is the tier to get; Free's 30-day window is a genuine limitation for planning ahead.

Pick FamilyWall if location sharing, family messaging, or shared budgeting is the feature you'd otherwise buy a separate app for, and you're willing to pay $44.99/yr for Premium and tolerate some sync hiccups.

Pick Calendara if your household is on iPhone and the thing you hate is entering the schedule. Take a photo instead, and let two-way Google sync keep everyone — including Android relatives — on the same calendar. If you're leaving one of these apps, our best Cozi alternatives and best FamilyWall alternatives guides compare the full field.

Bottom line

Cozi is the safer, cheaper organizer; FamilyWall is the broader one with reliability caveats. Both leave data entry on your plate. If you're on iPhone, Calendara removes that job — free during early access, then $4.99/mo or $39.99/yr once pricing begins — and syncs two-way with the Google Calendar the rest of your family already uses.
